Here is a list of good reads we’ve reviewed and compiled for you, in order of age group.
4- to 6-year-olds

Early phonics learning made easy with this I’m Ready for Phonics book by Ladybird. A great way to introduce phonics, letters and sounds to your little one.

A lovely book full of questions and prompts to share with small children, which will keep them interested as they flip through the pages. Also works as an early vocabulary builder!

This one is our favourite for building reading skills! Children love the cheeky stories and pictures full of drama, fun and surprises.
7- to 8-year-olds

This phonics reader series is a great introduction to simple, fun mysteries for beginning readers! We love this one as it’s designed for a typical 7-year-old’s reading level—challenging without being too complex.

Duke is a brave lifeguard dog—until he is banned from the beach! Books with short chapters are a fantastic way for independent young readers to stay interested and move on to the next phase of their reading journey.

If your child is interested in how things work, this Nat Geo book will be a valuable addition to the bookshelf. While practising reading aloud, pick up fun facts and information as well.
9- to 12-year-olds

We adore this Penguin recommendation and classic for its magical atmosphere and inspiring story. Challenge your child to pick out phrases they like – it’s the perfect opportunity to improve their descriptive writing skills!

Join the crew of crafty kids as they try to outsmart nosy adults and save their home. We hear this book has its young and old readers laughing aloud!

A delight through the ages, Roald Dahl’s Matilda is a story full of magic, kindness, evil ways and love! No list of best books for children aged 9 to 12 would be complete without it.
